Can You Become a Coach at 40? Everything You Need to Know

Προπονητική ΣΑΕΚ ΣΒΙΕ

If you love sports and are considering pursuing a career in coaching, you may be wondering whether 40 is too late to make such a career change. Why not? Age alone is not an obstacle, as long as you are willing and able to invest the time and effort required to pursue a new professional direction.

So, what does it take to become a coach at 40, and which study options can help you embark on a new career in the sports industry?

Changing Careers at 40: Is It Too Late for a Fresh Start?

First of all, it is never too late to change careers. At 40, you can choose a new professional path, especially if your current job no longer fulfils you or if you want to turn a personal interest into a professional activity.

At this stage of your life, you have a clearer understanding of what you want and the direction you would like to take. At the same time, you have already gained valuable experience and skills, such as reliability, communication, organisation and people management, which can also prove useful in a new profession.

Of course, changing careers is not always easy. It requires preparation, realistic planning and, naturally, a willingness to dedicate time to the process. The good news? Yes, making such a change is entirely possible, even at 40.

Why Coaching Can Become a Second Career

For many people, sports begin as a personal interest: a sport they have practised for years, regular exercise or participation in a sports community. Over time, sports can become an integral part of their daily lives, leading them to ask themselves: “Could I turn this into a career?”

Coaching gives you the opportunity to work in the sports industry by guiding others, organising their training and helping them develop their skills and achieve their goals.

Career opportunities are not necessarily limited to one team or a single sport. Depending on your specialisation and qualifications, you can explore different areas of coaching and physical education.

What Does It Take to Become a Coach?

It is important to distinguish personal experience from professional training. Having practised a sport for many years provides a valuable foundation, but working as a professional coach requires a broader set of knowledge and skills.

Depending on the sport and the career path you wish to pursue, your training may include subjects such as:

  • Coaching principles and methodology
  • Sports-specific techniques and tactics
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Training programme design and organisation
  • Injury prevention and exercise safety
  • Sports psychology
  • Athlete communication and management

Equally important are skills such as patience, responsibility, attention to detail and the ability to communicate effectively with different people.

How to Know Whether Coaching Is Right for You

A coach’s day-to-day responsibilities differ from those involved in practising a sport for personal enjoyment. Before deciding to make this career change, consider whether you are genuinely interested in the professional side of coaching.

Coaching may be right for you if:

  • You enjoy working with people and guiding them towards their goals.
  • You want to develop professionally and continuously acquire new knowledge.
  • You are comfortable taking responsibility and working consistently.
  • You care not only about your own performance but also about the progress of others.
  • You are willing to invest time in education and practical experience.

On the other hand, if your interest lies exclusively in your personal relationship with exercise or a particular sport, it is worth considering whether you really want to turn it into a full-time profession.

Coaching Studies: Which Educational Path Can You Follow?

If you decide to pursue coaching professionally, you will need to choose the right educational path based on your chosen sport and career goals.

Studying Physical Education and Sport Science at a university (TEFAA) is one option, but it is not the only route into coaching. In Greece, there are different education and training options, ranging from university degrees in Physical Education and Sport to programmes offered by Vocational Training Schools (SAEK, formerly IEK) and professional training programmes specialising in coaching specific sports.

Before choosing a programme, it is important to identify the sport you want to specialise in and check the qualification awarded, the certification requirements and the professional rights associated with that particular educational path.

Coaching Studies at a SAEK Vocational Training School

If you are looking for a more practical, career-oriented educational path that combines theoretical training with hands-on experience, studying Coaching at a SAEK vocational training school can be an excellent option.

At the SBIE SAEK School of Coaching, you can specialise in sports such as football, basketball, tennis, volleyball, swimming, athletics and combat sports, as well as areas such as general gymnastics, aerobics, weight training and fitness training.

They can also explore career paths such as personal training and fitness and wellness consulting.
